The West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey (WVGES) receives weekly batches of well records (i.e. plats, completions, plugging affidavits, etc.) from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection Office of Oil and Gas (WVDEP-OOG), which receives those records from well operators. WVGES has no control over the information submitted on those records by the operators, but its staff works to recognize the quality of the data and resolve and correct inconsistencies, errors, or problems with those data as possible.
WVGES staff enter OWNERS and LOCATIONS records from well plats (permits) into the database. Staff geologists work with the well completion records to interpret and enter COMPLETIONS, PAYS/SHOWS/WATER, and STRATIGRAPHY data into the database. Staff scan e-logs received from either WVDEP-OOG or directly from operators, and enter a MECHANICAL LOG CATALOG record into the database. Other staff annually process monthly production data received from WVDEP-OOG into the PRODUCTION table in the database.
From the data in the database, records are then written into Excel (.xlsx), comma separated value (.csv), and shapefile (.shp) formats for various applications.

Permit Number: A five-digit numerical assignment for wells in a county, beginning with 00001 in each county; the leading zeroes may be omitted. Data Source: The permit number for a well is assigned by WVDEP-OOG.
West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey
Suffix: A description of the episode of drilling. Data Source: Typically assigned by WVDEP-OOG, but occasionally reinterpreted by the West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey.
West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey
A new location for a vertical well.
West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey
A new location for a deviated or horizontal well.
West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey
Deepening of an existing vertical well; re-entry of an established vertical well that results in the total depth of the well being greater than it was during the original drilling; may result in the completion of a deeper unit.
West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey
Deepening of an existing vertical, deviated, or horiziontal well in a deviated or horizontal manner; re-entry of an existing vertical, deviated, or horizontal well for the purpose of drilling and completing it in a deeper unit.
West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey
Workover of an existing vertical well; re-entry of an established well that results in the total depth of the well being equal to or less than the original depth of the well; may result in the completion of the same formation or a shallower unit.
West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey
Workover of an existing vertical, deviated, or horiziontal well in a deviated or horizontal manner; no new vertical footage is added; may result in the completion of the same formation or a shallower unit.
West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey
Plugging of an existing vertical, deviated, or horizontal well due to the well being a dry hole, an abandoned older well, or in conjunction with coal mining. A well may be partially plugged from total depth up to a shallower formation from which it may produce.

DISCLAIMER REGARDING THE RELEASE OF DATA AND USER REQUIREMENTS The West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey (WVGES) makes basic data available to the public from its computerized databases on mineral resources under the following conditions: 1. We believe the data in the WVGES computer databases to have been generated and assembled with a high degree of professionalism, accuracy, and precision for the purposes for which they were originally intended. In this context, "data" refer to numerical and textual data (such as in the "pipeline" application), digitial data (such as .las files), digital images (such as digital photographs), scanned records (such as completion reports), and spatial data (such as shapefiles). Some data have been compiled from other sources and the WVGES accepts no responsibility for any inaccuracies in those data. Therefore, we cannot and do not, either implicitly or explicitly, guarantee the accuracy, precision, or completeness of the data. 2. Neither the WVGES nor its staff members are liable or responsible for any damage or loss resulting from the use of the databases or from inaccuracies contained in the databases. 3. These data are provided as a service to the State of West Virginia through the WVGES for the purpose of research and development efforts. Final use of these data is the sole responsibility of the user. 4. We encourage you to report any problems, inconsistencies, or errors noted in using these data to the Computing Services Program, so that we can correct them and provide even better service.
