In 1998, the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) scanned a paper copy of the 1968 map at 300 dpi, 8-bit color, and then georeferenced it. Rock unit boundaries were digitized from the image and attributed by WVDEP. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) Water Resources Division later revised the attributes of large water bodies and referenced the datum to NAD83. (Information taken from the West Virginia GIS Data Clearinghouse "Geologic Map of West Virginia" web page--http://wvgis.wvu.edu/data/dataset.php?ID=43.)
A digital copy of the 1968 geologic map was queried to obtain map unit equal to "Dm" (Marcellus), "Dmb" (Harrell, Mahantango, Marcellus), or "Dmn" (Marcellus Formation and Needmore Shale).
