The stratigraphic distribution of Barium (Ba) shows that West Virginia coals generally average less than 150 ppm Ba on a whole coal basis with lower amounts in New River Formation coals.  High Ba anomalies in the Brush Creek, Lower Kittanning, Williamson and Matewan coals may be related to thin coals and overlying marine strata (see cautionary notes page).
