The histogram of chromium in all West Virginia coal beds shows a distribution skewed toward low values with a mean of 17.85 ppm (± 12.71 ppm) on a whole coal basis and a tail toward higher Cr contents.  The maximum Cr content was 131.8 ppm in a sample of the Peerless coal.  Chromium correlated well with ash yield, and the ash related elements thorium (Th), scandium (Sc), vanadium (V), hafnium (Hf), lithium (Li), tantalum (Ta), lead (Pb), zirconium (Zr), cesium (Cs) and niobium (Nb) and rare earth elements cerium (Ce), lanthanum (La), europium (Eu), samarium (Sm) and lutetium (Lu).
