Of 456 samples, only 77 contained detectable levels of Dy.  The histogram of dysprosium of these analyses displays an irregular distribution with a mean of 2.03 ppm (± 1.02 ppm) on a whole coal basis with a tail toward higher values.  The maximum Dy content was 6.18 ppm in the Powellton A coal.  Despite the small number of analyses, dysprosium correlated slightly with ash yield and several rare earth elements such as erbium (Er), gadolinium (Gd), neodymium (Nd), cerium (Ce), europium (Eu), lanthanum (La), samarium (Sm) and terbium (Tb) and ash related elements such as lithium (Li), thorium (Th), vanadium (V), zirconium (Zr), chromium (Cr) and lead (Pb). Many of these correlations were with elements present in the mineral monazite (Y, Gd, Nd, Ce and La).
