The stratigraphic distribution of Neodymium (Nd) shows most coals average less than 10 ppm with a slight stratigraphic trend toward increased Nd upward in Middle Pennsylvanian coals, possibly reflecting the ubiquitous occurrence of monazite and other ash related minerals in West Virginia coals.
