Stratigraphic Distribution of Scandium (Sc)

The stratigraphic distribution of Scandium (Sc) shows low (<4 ppm) values in Pocahontas, New River and lower Kanawha Formation coals and coals of the Monongahela and Dunkard groups. Upper Kanawha through Conemaugh coals contain higher scandium. Although Sc correlated moderately with ash yield and is touted as a mineral matter related element in the literature, this distribution does not match the ash yield distribution in West Virginia coals.
