The stratigraphic distribution of Thorium (Th) shows a general trend with coals of the upper Kanawha Formation, the Allegheny Group and Conemaugh Group exhibited the greatest whole coal thorium contents. Pocahontas, New River and lower Kanawha Formation coal beds contained low and variable thorium contents, and coals of the Upper Pennsylvanian, especially the important Pittsburgh, Redstone and Sewickley coals exhibited low thorium abundances.
