Quiz Questions:

  1. +5 We speak of basalt as a fine-grained rock that is low in silica and high in iron and magnesium. All of the minerals are silicate minerals as the lava cooled. In general, what must be the composition of the magma source for the basalt that you would find on the big islands of Hawaii?
  2. +5 What is the relationship between a magma source beneath Yellowstone National Park and the presence of Old Faithful Geyser?
  3. +5 At both Bryce and Zion national parks, we are seeing the results of erosion of thick sequences of sedimentary rocks. Why were we able to say that the Great White Throne exposure at Zion was an ancient dune feature? What is the geologic age of these rocks?
  4. +5 What is the difference between a crater and a caldera? What would you call the feature that we now designate as Yellowstone National Park? Could there be another eruption there?
  5. +5 Describe the relationship between plat boundaries and the creation of the Cascades Range. Are all of the volcanics drawing from the same magma pool? How would you plan field work and laboratory work to determine whether there is one or many magma pools beneath the Cascades?
