Geoscience Education in the Mountain State: |
| CATS Earth Science Connections IV | |
| CATS Field Trip |
Friday, April 26, through Sunday, April 28, 2002
We will convene on Friday night (April 26), staying at the Holiday Inn in Star City. NOTE THE CHANGE. We could NOT get enough
rooms at the Holiday Inn Express at Glenmark Center. Take I-79 to the Star City Exit west of Morgantown
(the exit for Mountaineer Field and the Coliseum). Turn right on US 19, cross the Star City Bridge and
continue up the hill past Shoneys. Turn right just before the Coliseum on Saratoga Street. The Holiday
Inn is again on your right. For those who arrive early, at 8:00 p.m. Jack and I will have samples of
iron ore and geologic maps of where we will be on the trip. We will park our vehicles at the Coliseum on Saturday
morning, and leave by 8:00 a.m. We will then travel to Cornwall, Pennsylvania, to the iron museum, have dinner in the
Lancaster, Pennsylvania, area (good Amish food) and stay the night in York, Pennsylvania, at another Holiday Inn. On Sunday morning,
we will travel a short distance to Gettysburg to correlate geology, weathering and great battles, then
another 30 miles to Chambersburg and a saprolite. On the way back to Morgantown, we will stop at the Finzel,
Maryland, interchange (I-68) to view the chemistry of rocks of Devonian and Mississippian ages. We should be back
in Morgantown between 2:30 and 3:00 for your trip home.
If you are a AAA member, you might find maps of Maryland and Pennsylvania helpful. Of special use would be the
South Central Pennsylvania Special Area Map. There are also AAA CitiMaps of Lancaster and York/Gettysburg that would help you locate places.
