Geoscience Education in the Mountain State:
Student Field Trips

Student Field Trips
WVGES facilities are popular as a jumping-off point for student field trips. Our classroom serves as a meeting, organizational, and instructional site. Field trips usually involve a walk along Cheat Lake to see and discuss shoreline features and slope features within the canyon. Trips have visited local surface coal mines to discuss coal geology and reclamation/environmental procedures. We have also walked around nearby Coopers Rock State Forest investigating depositional environments and weathering of large sandstone blocks, studying folding in sedimentary rocks, and examining the environments of local streams and the implications of geology on the history of the area.
