Changes To Updated Oil and Gas Well Data

Changes in the 03/01/09 Version of the Database Since the Previous Release (10/30/07)

Since the previous release of the database, data for more than 1,300 "current" well completions (i.e., new well completions, drill-deepers, workovers, etc.) were added to the database in the OWNERS/COMPLETIONS, PAYS/SHOWS/WATER, and STRATIGRAPHY data tables; these "current" well completions came from weekly batches received from the State regulatory authority from mid-2004 through much of 2005, with a few batches from 2006 and early 2007. Changes/updates were also made in more than 170,000 other data records in the database. Among the major changes in this version are:

LOCATIONS: Well location records for nearly 15,000 were added or updated since the previous release of the database.
OWNERS/COMPLETIONS: Three structural changes were made to this record format: the size of the company number field was increased from 15 bytes to 30 bytes, the size of the mineral owner field was increased from 24 bytes to 30 bytes, and the size of the episode comment field was increase from 40 bytes to 100 bytes. Several operator codes were updated. More than 8,200 records were added to, or updated in, this table.
PAYS/SHOWS/WATER: More than 7,100 data records were added or updated, mostly for recently completed wells.
STRATIGRAPHY: More than 13,400 records were added or edited, many for current well completeions.
PRODUCTION: The previous 2006 monthly and annual production data were removed from the database and a new version was written into the database, with more than 6,000 additional records than were previously available; the new total of wells with 2006 production data is more than 52,000. Production data records with 2007 monthly and annual data were added for more than 53,000 wells. Additional review and editing refined some of the production data in the database.
MECHANICAL LOG CATALOG: In conjunction with a major effort within the agency on scanning e-logs and updating their records in the database, all of the 22,532 MLC records were processed and their database records re-written since the previous release of the database. Many additional logs were scanned (in TIFF format) in the Berea, Venango, Bradford, Elk, Tuscarora, and Devonian shale plays; the top and bottom depths of specific scanned log types have been entered into the database to enable search and retrieval of specific information. Additional logs have been digitized (in .LAS format) and relevant database fields updated with that information. Much of this work has been supported by federally-funded research projects, for which we appreciate the support.
PLUG: More than 300 plugging records were added or updated since the previous release.
WELL SAMPLES AND CORES: Only one new record was added to the WSC table, although updates were made to 14 other records.
