Major Changes To Updated Oil and Gas Well Data

Major Changes in the 04/02/2012 Version of the Database Since the Previous Release (01/25/2010)

Since the previous release of the database, hundreds of "current" well completions (i.e., new well completions, drill-deepers, workovers, etc.) were added to the database in the OWNERS/COMPLETIONS, PAYS/SHOWS/WATER, and STRATIGRAPHY data tables. These "current" well completions came from weekly batches received from the State regulatory authority through fall 2011; LOCATION and OWNER data are included for recently permitted wells through February 2012. A total of more than 322,000 records were added or updated in this version. Among the major changes in this version of the database are:

LOCATIONS: Well location records are now provided in the NAD83 datum. Additionally, nearly 7,000 records were added or modified.
BOTTOMHOLE LOCATIONS: A new table was added to provide 1,701 location records for proposed (or actually drilled) bottomhole locations for deviated/horizontal wells.
OWNERS/COMPLETIONS: Nearly 26,000 records have been added or modified since the previous release. In an attempt to capture more information about deviated/horizontal completions, the following new fields have been added to the database: total measured depth, proposed vertical depth, proposed measured depth, proposed target formation, and DEP permit issued date. The previous total depth field has been redefined as "total vertical depth". Five data fields have been expanded in size: well number, lease name, lease number, mineral owner, and OWNERS comment.
PAYS/SHOWS/WATER: More than 45,000 data records were added or updated, many for recently completed wells. A "Section" field was added, to denote whether the footages listed in a particular record are in the vertical or deviated portion of the well completion. In the deviated portion of a well completion, the "top" of the completed interval field in the record can also mean the "beginning" of the completed horizontal interval; the "bottom" of the completed interval field in the record can also mean the "end" of the completed horizontal interval.
STRATIGRAPHY: More than 98,000 records were added or edited, many for current well completions. Stratigraphic sequences for deviated/horizontal wells may be described from offset wells. Some Devonian stratigraphic terminology has been refined in our lookup tables; it did not require code changes in the database per se, just interpretative/translation changes.
PRODUCTION: Production data records for 2009 and 2010 with monthly and annual data were added for more than 56,000 wells for each year. Additional review and editing refined additional records in the database. A total of 116,155 records were added or modified since the previous release of the database.
PLUG: More than 2,000 plugging records were added or updated since the previous release.
MECHANICAL LOG CATALOG: In conjunction with a major effort within the agency to scan e-logs and update their records in the database, more than 500 new MLC records were added and all of the 24,595 MLC records were edited in the database since the previous release. Note that while all of the e-logs have been scanned (in TIFF format), the scanned images themselves are not included in this database release; they are available for free download at http://www.wvgs.wvnet.edu/www/news/dataslgs.htm. Information about the e-logs in the WVGES Log Library is included in this database so that users can search and query for available e-logs meeting user needs. Some additional e-logs have been digitized (in .las format) and relevant database fields have been updated with that information; most of the digitizing has been done in-house, primarily with Neuralog and occasionally in Petra. Much of this work with the e-logs has been supported by federally-funded research projects, for which we gratefully appreciate the support.
WELL SAMPLES AND CORES: Nearly 150 new records were added or modified in the WSC table since the previous release, mostly the result of the addition of new cuttings to our collections.
