Major Changes To Updated Oil and Gas Well Data

Major Changes in the 10/24/2013 Version of the Database Since the Previous Release (04/02/2012)

Since the previous release of the database, hundreds of "current" well completions (i.e., new well completions, drill-deepers, workovers, etc.) were added to the database in the OWNERS/COMPLETIONS, PAYS/SHOWS/WATER, and STRATIGRAPHY data tables. These "current" well completions came from weekly batches received from the State regulatory authority for oil and gas through September 2013; LOCATION and OWNER data are included for recently permitted wells through mid-September 2013. A total of more than 186,000 records were added or updated in this version. Among the major changes in this version of the database are:

LOCATIONS: More than 2,100 well location records were added or modified in this version of the database.
BOTTOMHOLE LOCATIONS: More than 1,000 records were added (or modified) for records for proposed (or actually drilled) bottomhole locations for deviated/horizontal wells.
OWNERS/COMPLETIONS: More than 24,000 records have been added or modified since the previous release of the database.
PAYS/SHOWS/WATER: More than 12,000 data records were added or updated, mostly for recently completed wells. Recent work on salt water disposal wells resulted in improved data and considerable updates available in this table.
STRATIGRAPHY: More than 18,000 records were added or edited, many for current well completions. Interpretations of some Upper Devonian stratigraphic units have been refined/updated.
PRODUCTION: Production data records were added for 2011 and 2012, with monthly and annual data for nearly 56,000 wells for each year. Additional new data plus review and editing refined and added several thousand records in the database. A total of 122,331 records were added or modified since the previous release of the database.
PLUG: More than 700 plugging records were added or updated since the previous release.
MECHANICAL LOG CATALOG: More than 5,000 MLC records were added or modified in the database since the previous release. Two new data fields were added: KICK-OFF POINT and LOG MEASURED DEPTH. While all of the e-logs have been scanned (in TIFF format), the scanned images themselves are not included in this database release; they are available for free download from the Geological Survey’s website at http://www.wvgs.wvnet.edu/www/news/dataslgs.htm. Information about the e-logs in the WVGES Log Library is included in this database so that users can search and query for available e-logs meeting user needs.
WELL SAMPLES AND CORES: More than 300 records were added or modified in the WSC table since the previous release, mostly the result of the acquisition of new cuttings to our collections.
