Survey Geologist 2/3

Duties:

The WVGES is looking for an experienced geologist to join the subsurface mapping team. This is an office position that will primarily focus on subsurface mapping using geological data for oil and gas, CCUS, and other projects. The candidate will need to be a resolute and proactive worker and a resourceful problem solver. Appointment is initially for a one-year probationary period with the possibility of a permanent appointment after the first year. .

Training:

Applicants must possess a minimum of a BS degree in Geology from an accredited college or university, with coursework including Sedimentology, Stratigraphy, and Structural Geology as well as attendance and successful completion of geologic field camp.

Requirements:

Applicants for the Survey Geologist 2 must possess a MS degree in Geology from an accredited college or university, with coursework including Sedimentology, Stratigraphy, and Structural Geology as well as the attendance and successful completion of geologic field camp. A BS and 2 years professional work experience may be substituted for a MS degree. Similarly, the Survey Geologist 3 position requires a PhD, a MS in Geology from an accredited college or university and three years of professional experience as a geologist, or a bachelors degree in Geology from an accredited four-year college or university and five years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience as a professional geologist may be substituted. Appointment level is contingent on the amount of prior professional and educational experience. Furthermore, the candidate will need to be highly proficient using Microsoft Office and ESRI mapping packages like ArcGIS or ArcMap. The ideal candidate will have experience using subsurface mapping software such as Petra, Petrel, or Geographix, familiarity with subsurface data such as well logs, core, and well cuttings, and knowledge of oil and gas operations or employment history in the oil and gas industry.

Informational Services Section

GIS Database Administrator I

 

Position Number/Identifier: GIS Database Administrator I

Duties:

This is a position in the Informational Services Program with duties that include, but are not limited to, a high level of experience in working with ESRI's Enterprise GIS platform including: ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Web Application Builder, Experience Builder, Survey123, and Field Mapper. The candidate will perform development of new GIS web applications, as well as maintenance, bugfixes, and enhancements to existing applications, tools and widgets. Duties will include maintaining existing agency applications (patching, updates, and upgrades). Experience in web design/development and an understanding of Web 2.0 concepts is desired.

The candidate should be proficient in working with and maintaining geospatial data in a versioned enterprise relational databases environment, including experience using GIS data within at least one of the following: Oracle and/or PostgreSQL databases. Candidates with the ability to quickly learn new technologies, work independently, and quickly turnaround maps, application prototypes or other deliverables will be given preference.

The candidate will perform routine maintenance activities (patching, job monitoring, SSL Certificate updates etc.) related to agency GIS servers. Experience and proficiency working with Python to develop scripts aimed at data ETL, application support/development, and/or GIS platform administration as well as proficiency leveraging Arcade for web GIS development and functional enhancements is desired. The candidate will serve as backup geodatabase administrator to perform geodatabase design, development, tuning, and integration-related work as needed/requested. Familiarity with computer and network infrastructure, ability to assist with installation, configuration, and maintenance of organizations computer networks and systems is necessary.

Appointment is initially for a one-year probationary period with the possibility of a permanent appointment after the first year. 

Training:

Applicants must possess a Geography/GIS degree from an accredited college or university, with coursework including GIS, Database design/development, and Geospatial Analysis.

Requirements:

Applicants will be required to work in the office throughout the work week. Office tasks will involve extensive computer work updating and maintaining the Survey's various databases. The candidate must be physically capable of assisting with manual labor, such as moving core boxes, paper records, and other tasks as needed.

Other:

A valid driveres license is required, and the applicant must be insurable under the state's vehicle insurance plan.

Duties:

This is an entry-level position in the Geoscience and Mapping Program with duties that are a combination of outdoor field work and office work and require considerable training. The candidate should be a motivated self-starter with a strong desire to become a professional geologist. Survey geologists work on a variety of projects including both collaborative and individual research. Duties will include, but not be limited to, the following tasks: geologic mapping, field sampling, sample and rock descriptions, inventory and organization of legacy datasets, scanning and/or digital capture of geological data, technical report writing, response to requests for information from the public, and other duties as necessary. Appointment is initially for a one-year probationary period with the possibility of a permanent appointment after the first year. .

Training:

Applicants must possess a Geology BS degree from an accredited college or university, with coursework including Sedimentology, Stratigraphy, and Structural Geology as well as attendance and successful completion of geologic field camp.

Requirements:

Applicants will be required to work outdoors all-day mapping in rough terrain and variable weather for up to a week at a time, multiple weeks a year, especially during the spring and fall field mapping seasons. Office tasks will involve extensive computer work updating and maintaining the Survey's various databases. The candidate must be physically capable of assisting with manual labor, such as moving core boxes, paper records, and other tasks as needed.
