"What's New" in the 4/20/2017 Version of the Oil and Gas Well Database Since the Previous Release (4/26/2016)

Since the previous release of the database, "current" well completions (i.e., new well completions, deepenings, workovers, etc.) were added to the database from weekly batches received from the State regulatory authority for oil and gas and from direct submissions to WVGES from operators through March 31, 2017. Since the previous release, 2 new data fields were added to the Well Samples and Cores (WSC) data table along with an increase in the size of one existing field in that table. Additionally, thousands of records were updated/modified as a result of ongoing work in the agency. A total of more than 195,000 records were added or updated in all nine tables in this release of the database.

Among the major changes in this version of the database are:

LOCATIONS:

More than 600 well location records were added or modified in this version of the database.

BOTTOMHOLE LOCATIONS:

More than 800 new records were added (or modified) for records for proposed (or actually drilled) bottomhole locations for deviated/horizontal wells. In the case where an "as drilled" bottomhole location was submitted, the "as proposed" bottomhole location remains in the database.

OWNERS/COMPLETIONS:

More than 30,700 records have been added or modified since the previous release of the database, including thousands of records updated in the 30000-series of pre-1929 wells in the State and a comprehensive review of farm names, well numbers, and company numbers in several counties in the northern part of the State.

PAYS/SHOWS/WATER:

More than 15,200 data records were added or updated, for both recently completed wells and as updates to wells already in the database. Many of the new records were added from recently completed horizontal/deviated wells which have a large number of perforation zones. Records were also added from an ongoing comprehensive review of the 30000-series older wells in the State and from editing/review of stratigraphic units assigned to pay/show/horizon zones in this table, especially Devonian shale units.

STRATIGRAPHY:

More than 29,700 records were added or edited, including both current well completions and considerable updates/additions to wells already in the database. Records were also added from an ongoing comprehensive review of the 30000-series older wells in the State. Interpretations of several Upper Devonian stratigraphic units have been refined.

PRODUCTION:

Monthly and annual well production data for 2015 were added to the database for 56,474 unique wells. In addition, since new data for 2014 well production were received during the year by the State regulatory authority for oil and gas, the entire 2014 dataset previously in the database was rewritten with the updated 2014 production data. There are more than 1,500,000 production records in the database, from 1979 to 2015.

PLUG:

More than 200 plugging records were added or updated since the previous release.

MECHANICAL LOG CATALOG (MLC):

More than 200 records were added to or modified in this table. The scanned images themselves are not included in this database release; they are available for free download from the Geological Survey’s website at http://www.wvgs.wvnet.edu/www/news/dataslgs.htm. Information about the e-logs in the WVGES Log Library is included in this database so that users can search and query for available e-logs meeting user needs.

WELL SAMPLES AND CORES (WSC):

More than 30 records were added to the database or updated since the previous release of the database; most of these were for newly-acquired cores and cuttings. Two new fields were added to this table, and the size of one existing field was increased.
