Quiz Questions:

  1. +4 Identify the two types of under-ground coal mining which have created subsidence problems in Marion County and elsewhere in north central West Virginia. For each, indicate the timing of subsidence with respect to mining (that is, how long following removal of the coal does it take to realize subsidence is occurring).

  2. +6 Identify four specific sources of information on mountaintop removal. Two of them are to be WEB sites. Identify two counties in West Virginia where this is a critical issue--without this type of mining, the coal cannot be economically removed.

  3. +4 In Vienna, West Virginia, the pollution of the ground-water system was a point-source type. What was the aquifer? What did the city have to do with respect to providing clean water for the citizens?

  4. +4 What is a Superfund site? Is this designation established by state or federal agencies? Identify one such site in West Virginia. Where would you look for a list of all Superfund sites in West Virginia?

  5. +2 Which isotope of carbon is naturally radioactive?

  6. +2 After five half-lives, how much radioactive isotope remains?

  7. +3 What is the geologic medium in which HLW would be stored if the Yucca Mountain Project is completed and goes on line? Why does the situation with respect to ground water at Yucca Mountain appear to support the choice of this location?
