The Appalachian Basin Tight Gas Reservoirs Project provides a collection of tools/applications to give the user the ability to search and gather information about gas and oil wells in West Virginia and Pennsylvania.  Data have been organized by play for the following plays:  Berea/Murrysville, Venango, Bradford, Elk, Medina/"Clinton" and  Tuscarora.  The data have been provided by the geological surveys of these states.

Interactive Mapping:  The Appalachian Basin Tight Gas interactive mapping system provides access to layers and documents categorized by play. Each play contains well, cross-section, and map layers. A number of tools are available for exploring the layers including the zoom, identify, query, buffer, and data extraction tools. And, supplemental information may be obtained for the well layers by using hyperlinks. Supplemental information includes well-based header data and, for selected wells:  scanned logs, digitized logs, and core/sample data.  Well layers were generated from data obtained from the West Virginia and Pennsylvania geological surveys; cross-section and map layers, for the most part, were obtained from The Atlas of Major Appalachian Gas Plays. In addition to the play-based layers, play-based documents may be accessed through the system. These documents include such items as charts, diagrams, and reports.

Well Header Data:  (Detailed Help
This application allows the user to query oil and gas header records in our system through the given fields on the form.  The query options include a combination of numeric, character, pull-down and checkbox searches.  Once the user enters selection criteria and hits the search button, the matching header records are then returned.  You must select a "Play" and enter/select at least one other condition for the application to run.  If errors are made in your selection, error messages will appear in red to help you correct  the problem.  The returned records will also provide a link to other applicable information that might be available.  More detailed help on this application can be found here.

Well-Based E-Files:  (Detailed HelpThis application allows the user to search and view well-based electronic files.  Data types currently in the system include scanned logs (wireline logs), digitized logs, well plats, completion reports, plugging affidavit, core photographs, well sample descriptions, core data and well permits.  Some data types are only available for West Virginia.  Most files available are of type .tif, .jpg, .las, .pdf or .xls.  Fields available for query are play penetrations, well API number, file type, county, state and file modified date.  Once the user enters selection criteria and hits the search button, the matching records are then returned.  A view link will be available to view or download the file.  Note that depending on the software on your computer, viewing of a file may open in the internet browser, a different application, or may be prompted to save the file.  We advise to save scanned logs (wireline logs) and not try to view them directly because of the size of the files.  To save files, right-click the view link and select the save option.  It may also appear as "save target as".  Again, more detailed help on this application can be found here.

Play-Based E-Files:  This application is for searching, viewing and downloading play-based electronic files.  These documents are assigned to a specific play or group of plays.  Most items available in this application come from portions of the "Project References" entries.  Fields available for query are  play, data type and author.  When searching by play, the group "Devonian-General" will return all entries for Devonian, plus entries for Venango, Bradford and Elk.  Likewise, "Silurian-General" will return all entries for Medina/"Clinton" and Tuscarora.  After entering your search criteria and pressing the search button, an overview of each matching record is returned.  This list can be exported to Excel by pressing the "Export to Excel" button, which provides an option to save or view the file.  To view the file, you must have Excel installed.  A link is also provided to view or download the document and view the entire entry for that record.  This page will also display the full reference information for the selected document.  To view the document, the proper software must be installed on the viewing machine.  We recommend having Adobe Reader installed for viewing most play-based E-Files.  Other file types may exist which may also require seperate software for opening/viewing.  See the "Software & Hardware Requirements/Suggestions" portion of this page for other software suggestions.  

Project References:  This application is for searching references of the Appalachian Basin Tight Gas Reservoirs project.  The references are organized into four groups:  Berea, Devonian, Silurian and General.  The Berea includes the Berea play.  The Devonian includes the Venango, Bradford and Elk plays.  The Silurian includes the Medina/"Clinton" and Tuscarora plays. The General group is not related to any specific play.  Fields available for query are Play, Year, Author and Title.  For searching the year field requires a four-digit year and must be an exact match.  The Author and Title field use a contain (or like) operator for searching.  After entering your search criteria and pressing the search button, an overview of each matching record is returned.  This list can be exported to Excel by pressing the "Export to Excel" button where you have the option to save or view the file.  To view the file, you must have Excel installed.  A link is also provided to a details page to view the entire record.  This details page will also provide information and links to any related "Play-Base E-Files"  for this particular reference.      

Slabbed Core Photos: 
This is a listing of all wells for which we have digital photographs of slabbed cores in the given plays.  These are listed by well API number.  The page provides the number of images we have for the well, which mostly appear in one foot intervals.  It also provides a link to our core viewer application to see or download the photographs. 

File Repositories:  This is an HTTP file server that allows the user to navigate the directory structure to download or view the file(s) of interest. Currently we offer a variety of E-Files including: scanned well logs, digitized logs, slabbed core photographs, well sample descriptions, core data and other E-files (scanned plats and completions).  We advise you to save Scanned Logs and not try to view them directly because of the size of the files. To do so, right-click the image of interest and select the save option. Then you can direct the file to a location of your choice. Note these images vary in size and some may take several minutes to download, especially if using a 56k or slower dialup connection. Generally files are organized in county folders with some exceptions.

"Pipeline":  This is a link to the West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey's "pipeline" well data system. It provides public access, through a Web browser, to gas and oil well data for more than 140,000 gas and oil wells. The data are keyed on the well's API number, which consists of the state code, county code, and permit number for the well. Data contained within tables include: locations; completions; farm name and operator; pays and shows of hydrocarbons;  monthly and annual production of gas and/or oil, generally since 1979; formation tops and thicknesses;  plugging; data about mechanical logs on file in the Survey's log library as well as access to selected scanned well log images; and data about well samples and cores in the Survey's core library. Users of the "pipeline" system select the county from a menu, enter the permit number, and select the desired data type(s). The data are then displayed on the user's computer screen.
