The stratigraphic distribution of Cadmium (Cd) shows little variation in the coal beds of West Virginia. Only the coals of the upper Kanawha Formation and Allegheny Group of the Middle Pennsylvanian exhibit slightly elevated cadmium contents.  Sphalerite containing Cd was ubiquitous in West Virginia coals, commonly observed in minor amounts filling voids in inertinite macerals.
