Stratigraphic Distribution of Germanium (Ge) shows less than 5 ppm Ge in most coals with very low Ge in coals of the lower Allegheny Group and upper Kanawha Formation, and very high Ge in coals of the Conemaugh Group: Mahoning, Brush Creek, Bakerstown and Harlem coals (see cautionary notes page). Summary statistics suggest that germanium is bound to the organic fraction of the coal, therefore the concentration of Ge in specific age coals is unexpected and unexplained.
