The stratigraphic distribution of Zirconium (Zr) shows generally less than 30 ppm Zr in coals of the lower half of the Pennsylvanian (lower Kanawha Formation and below) with slightly elevated Zr in coals of the upper half of the Pennsylvanian (middle and upper Kanawha Formation and up) and lower Zr in the Pittsburgh and Redstone coals.
