  1. +5 We discussed the five kingdoms of life. Please consider the potential for fossils to reflect each kingdom. Rank-order the five kingdoms according to potential and provide a brief explanation for your placement of each kingdom.

  2. +4 Sand is a particle size--to geologists it is the size range between 1/16 mm in diameter and 2 mm in diameter. The particle may be of any mineral or rock type. Compare and contrast the range of sizes, the range of shapes, and the arrangement of the grains you might expect to find in:

    a. a river deposit in the rock record. Specifically, a channel deposit;

    b. a sand dune deposit.

    Note: The size, shape, and arrangement of particles in a sedimentary rock are known as the sedimentary rock texture.

  3. +4 What is coal? How did it form? What might it tell us about the climate and growing conditions in what is now West Virginia during the Pennsylvanian Period?

  4. +2 Why is there no coal mined in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia?
