The stratigraphic distribution of Chlorine (Cl) shows very low chlorine contents for coals of the Pocahontas Formation, and higher but gradually decreasing chlorine contents in coals of the New River Formation through the Allegheny Group.  Upper Pennsylvanian coals were relatively low in chlorine content.
