Trace Elements in West Virginia Coals
The
number of samples with chlorine (Cl) analyses was relatively low (n = 254)
and were generally concentrated in Kanawha, Fayette and Nicholas counties
where moderate to high chlorine contents were observed. Coals of
north central West Virginia were generally low in chlorine content.
These geographic distributions reflect the stratigraphic distribution of
chlorine with New River through Allegheny coals containing high chlorine
and Upper Pennsylvanian and Pocahontas Formation coals containing low chlorine
abundances.
